About Us

Troop 159 believes in fundamental Scouting, with the emphasis on fun, as the vehicle for Scouts to learn citizenship, fitness, and character. Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting, once wrote, "Scouting is a game with a purpose," and we agree wholeheartedly. Troop 159 offers the Scouts a highly personal Scouting experience, focusing on hands-on learning and experiences.

Troop Meetings

The troop meets regularly from 7:00pm until 8:30pm on Monday evenings at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Herndon. Troop 159 is a boy led troop. The Scouts run the meetings and once a month, instead of a regular meeting, they hold a Patrol Leaders Council to plan the next outing and future meetings. All Scouts are welcome.

Scouting means Outings

Generally the troop participates in one outing per month. Some are BSA Powhatan district events like the Camporee but most outings are planned and organized by the troop. In the past year we have gone:

  • Camping (including outdoor winter camping)
  • Cabing camping, shooting sports
  • Bicycling (Troop bike hike)
  • Canoeing Rappahannock Rive
  • Historical Touring: Antietam; Gettysburg; Fredericksburg
  • Hiking – Blue Ridge Mountains; Sky Meadows; AT Section
  • Theme Based Camping – Astronomy; First Aid; Skills

Summer Camp

Every year, the troop participates in a Scout summer camp program. In previous years, the troop has attended Camp Ockanickon in Bucks County, PA.  The Troop has also attended Camp Freedom in western PA, Camp Ottari and Goshen Scout Reservation (both in Southern Virginia).

Venture Program

Troop 159 has a very active Venture program that allows older Scouts further opportunities to improve their outdoor leadership skills. Each year culminates in an Annual week or longer outing to either BSA sponsored high adventure camps such as Philmont or Sea Base [Scuba] or a Troop organized outing such as Biking the C&O/GAP Trail, Canoeing in Maine or the Adirondack Mountains or Backpacking in the Great Smokey Mountains.
